The Tune of the Blue River
Ooh, the blue of the morning sky, so smooth and sweet, so pure and true Cric-crac, croon the agreeable birds, Oo-oo-oo, ah! The sunshine light on the day, Oo-oo-oo, ah! The river is running clean and cool Oo-oo-oo, ah! The lake glistens in the morning light so smooth and silky, no crease, no wrinkle The leaves dance in a gentle sway in tune with the birds, to whom they sing Ripples on the cool water edges Oo-oo-oo, ah! The song of the river can be heard Oo-oo-oo, ah! The steps of my feet make the path rhythmically like a snare drum in a blues change My thoughts drift and spin 'round and 'round like a graceful spinning top The long leg strides step on the stone, pounding out a tune for me And by evening, I can feel the soft sun rays on my cheek, the cool water on my toe, the winds gently caressing my hair As the smell of jasmine pervades the air and stars begin to glimmer out of the night sky, I look up and smile, with my teeth glistening bright as the ending words of the day

The Street Artist's Sailboat
There once was a well-known street artist Who was as clever as could be. He could make his art very lifelike Which was quite a sight to see. He liked tricking people with his art For it was all too easy. One day, while walking down the street With his art supplies in hand, He couldn't help but notice that The roads just looked too bland. If only it had a bit more pizzazz Wouldn’t that be grand? After staring at the street for a while, An idea came to his head. If there wasn’t anyone who could brighten the road, He would do it himself instead. Looking at his chalks, he thought "Why not?" He might as well go ahead. He stepped right onto the empty road Making sure no cars were coming by, It was time to set his plan into action, He might as well give it a try. He knew this project would be the best, Though he wouldn’t tell others why. With his chalk, he began to draw For an hour, or maybe two He added some black, a bit of white, And just a few touches of blue. How clever he was, for
One day in the magical land of Ilonata, a herd of unicorns went out to search for a lost foal. It had wandered into the deepest parts of the forest the night before to play a game of hide and seek with the other little unicorn foals but forgot to return home once it got dark. Usually, unicorns were quite skilled at blending into their backgrounds, so they could disappear behind trees and rocks with surprising ease. Their glittering coats and shining manes didn't give them away when they crept into the shadows. But the seeking unicorn didn't notice the hiding foal's shining mane, and no one came to look for it when it disappeared, which was probably why it got lost. The unicorns went into the forest and searched. They searched by the river, among the ferns, and behind the rocks and trees. But no matter where they looked, there was no sign of the missing foal. But suddenly, they discovered a trail of little muddy hoofprints that looked like they must have been left behind by the foal.
In a world full of noise,
A world full of war,
A world full of screaming, fighting, and shouting,
Sometimes the greatest wisdom can be found
In a peaceful, quiet place.
One of these places
Can be a gentle stream.
If you listen closely,
The clamor of everyday life
Will disappear completely.
For among the sound of the trickling water,
You can hear your soul
Whispering gently to you.
And if you look closely,
You will see,
A beautiful reflection of yourself
Upon the rippling water.
If there's a raft on the water,
Get on it,
And let the gentle stream carry you along.
It will make you feel easy and comfortable.

Luna Lowell was a very confident and energetic girl. She loved animals (especially dogs), making crafts, and playing the piano. She adored her best friends Brooke, Maya, and Ginny, and they enjoyed doing things together. No matter what, Luna would always count on them. She also loved her home life, but she kept it separate from her school life. She had a very close relationship with her mother, Charice, and they did a lot of things together for as long as Luna could remember. For as long as Charice could remember, Luna had always been a perfect daughter. Whenever Charice needed a job done, she would always count on Luna. This was how her daughter was given the affectionate nickname "Loyal Little Luna". But while their life was perfect, there was a secret that Charice had been hiding from her daughter for years. She didn't want to expose this secret to Luna too early, so she waited until after Luna reached teenhood. Eventually, a few days after Luna's thirteenth birthday, Charice sat

Happy On My Own (A Poem About Being Aro-Ace)
I am not a person Who desires romance, Because I don't need it to be happy. Being in love with someone, Either romantically or physically, Is not that important to me. But I'm still perfectly capable of love So I'm not broken, frigid, or unlovable. I'm not a robot. I'm not confused. I'm not just focused on other things at the moment. I love my family, And I love my friends, In a familiar and platonic way. No matter what other people think, No matter what other people say, I don't see mating or dating As anything more Than a time-consuming hobby. I have nothing against it, But I'm just not interested in it. I will always be single, But free to hold my own life in my hands. I don't need to focus on romance, As it's not a priority in my life. There are lots of other things Waiting for me That suit my best interests at heart. Even if you don't understand, Please show respect for how I feel. Even though I don't want romance, I can take care of myself.

Rhymes on a Dime
There once was a young man named Nathaniel Daniel. Everyone said that his first name rhymed with his last name, which was absolutely true. Not only did Nathaniel's name rhyme, but he also liked to speak in rhyme himself. This drew some attention from some people. Whenever they asked him why he spoke like that, he simply said, "I think it's fun to speak in rhyme. This way, my words come out sublime." But even though he thought rhyming was fun, some people didn't quite see the appeal of it. Especially not Tessie Thomas. She thought Nathaniel's habit was ridiculous, and she didn't know why he was always speaking in verse. "You know, Nathan, rhyming is only for when you are quoting or reciting a poem, rapping, or writing a poem," she said. "You don't do any of that, do you?" Nathaniel didn't know why his love of verse bothered Tessie, but her words didn't bother him. So he told her, "Rhyme is not only for when you are quoting or reciting, Nor when you are rapping, nor when you are

The Day That Time Stopped
For as long as society had existed, people relied on time. In fact, almost all the societies in the world depended on a time indication. For example, children at school would have two hours to take their tests and a car journey would take three hours or more. People used time to arrange a moment for meetings. People checked the timetable when they took the bus, and they made sure to count down the hours they had left during their shift at work. But some people were a little too ignorant to really realize how important time was, and they only realized it when they didn't have access to it. One of the consequences of time agreements was that people were sometimes late. Everyone was sometimes stressed by a tight schedule and deadlines. Clocks were everywhere: Watches, laptops, smartphones, on buildings, and so on. People woke up at 7 AM and went to bed at 11 PM. Time was a way of life. But one day, something very strange happened. All the clocks stopped ticking. It started when some
Winter was in full swing in the icy continent of Antarctica. The temperatures had dropped to -40 Fahrenheit and the winds raged at ninety miles per hour. Orca whales were navigating the ocean, looking for fish and squid to eat, seals were hauling out on land to rest, and albatrosses were wandering across the sky. But most importantly, all the penguins were getting ready to migrate to their colonial breeding grounds, because winter in Antarctica was a very important time for them to breed with other penguins and hatch offspring. Together, the penguins waddled, hopped, and tobogganed on their bellies as they made their way to the breeding grounds, which were sixty to a hundred miles away from the mainland. Once they got there, they would begin to mate. One day, an emperor penguin and his female mate had finally reached the breeding grounds, and the female penguin had already laid an egg. But she was not going to stay around to hatch it. Instead, she handed it off to her male mate so he
A nest on the porch Is home to baby robins That have bright red chests. The mother arrives With her beak full of worms for Her babies to eat. Their beaks wide open, They eagerly prepare to Have a nice supper. They chirp happily As the mother drops the worms Right into their beaks. The babies hatched from A strange kind of egg that is A bright shade of blue. Soon the babies grow To fly and sit upon trees And sing each morning. Once they've left the nest, Another bird will arrive To lay some more eggs. Once the eggs are laid, More robins will hatch and start The cycle again.

It was a typical summer Sunday at Fish Haven Aquarium. Families, couples, and children crowded the halls marveling at the aquatic creatures of all shapes and sizes on display. Everyone was enjoying their time admiring all the beautiful sea life…That is, except for Big Bertha, the giant Pacific octopus, who resided in one of the bigger tanks sitting several feet above the aquarium floor. She preferred to spend most of her time asleep in her tank, keeping to herself and never bothering anyone. The only time she was ever active was lunchtime, when the workers came and fed her a bucket full of shrimp, crabs, scallops, clams, and lobsters. The patrons always enjoyed watching Bertha greedily gobble her meal up before going back to sleep. To them, it was a moment of entertainment. Bertha knew she could keep the humans happy if they made her stomach happy. However, on this particular day, Bertha was not very happy at all. Every time patrons passed by her tank, some annoying kids would show up
Rest up, you sweet child of light, night arrives without a word. The brook will sing you a soft melody, charmer for sleep and weary eyes creep evermore. Please, use my lap to rest your head on. Take this wild bed as the dark takes in, for lay here now with heavy eyes of lead. But, before you go off to worlds unknown, where sleep is good. I ask, you look up into the heavens aglow. Look at those lights above caught in that vast sea of crystal lit dew. Remember that while sleep does gift you dreams, so does this life gift them too. Heroes and monsters, legends and odes are chiseled on the sky. For dreams and hope, dance over our heads all through our days. All you need do is to look up where constellations float on by. For the ancients dance and will gift you many things, so sleep and know dawn will arrive as the stars shine.

Hello, everyone. I thought I'd like to share something about me with you all, because I've been waiting to tell you for quite a while now. I think it's time I made it official. I'm part of the LGBTQ+ community. Specifically, I'm aromantic asexual. This means I'm not attracted to anyone either sexually or romantically. It's not all that bad, though, because I actually don't need a romantic partner to be happy. I enjoy my life as it is right now. In fact, I've been aro-ace for my whole life. I've never taken a romantic interest to anyone, because I always thought being in love with someone, either sexually or romantically, is not that important. While some people believe that they need a romantic relationship to feel complete or fulfilled, I am certainly not one of them. I've never experienced "crushes" or being "in love" with someone else, whether it was a regular person or some kind of celebrity. They're all just people to me, who all have their own hopes and dreams. I also have a
Hello, everyone. If you have been following me and my friend Rachel here on DA, you might have noticed that I haven't been posting as much as I used to. I sincerely apologize for the lack of new content, and I want you to know that I'm still alive and well. It's just that I haven't been able to do much in terms of writing, let alone the ambitious stories I had in mind for sharing here and elsewhere. Most of them aren't finished yet, as it takes quite a while for me to come up with good ideas for my stories. Most of my time has been spent focusing on my real-life concerns such as my freelance job. Not to mention that my home computer recently stopped working. I don't know what the issue is with it, but for some reason, it will not turn back on, no matter how many times I push the power button. I've been trying to find a way to fix it, but I'm concerned that I might mess something up and erase all my data, which I certainly don't want. For now, I am currently using my portable laptop and
Since a lot of people here on DA have been participating in the annual Mermay Challenge, we decided to give it a go by writing a mermaid-themed story. It's called "The Selkie and the Mermaid". It is about a selkie and a mermaid who meet up on dry land, share their fascination with human life, and become close. They do their best to demonstrate their knowledge of humans with each other and try to hide their non-human origins from land-dwellers, hoping that nobody suspects anything. Here's an excerpt from our story: Off the coast of a European country was a series of islands called the Rock Isles. The biggest island in the Rocky Isles was called Westmouth Cay. On Westmouth Cay, there was a village on the town beach populated by boatmen and fishermen. It was quite a peaceful, happy village, and the residents spent their time catching fish, harvesting seafood, riding their boats down the sparkly blue water, and walking along the beach on pleasant, sunny days. At the end of this
